New Europe: Baltic Summer

Plot: Michael Palin's New Europe: Baltic Summer

As used here, the phrase "New Europe" is a literal one: in this seven-part BBC miniseries, veteran Monty Python comic Michael Palin tours the countries that freed themselves from the jurisdiction of the Soviet Union - and thus joined the remainder of preexistent "old' Europe - with the fall of the Iron Curtain in the early 1990s.

The program operates on the presupposition that most western viewers will be completely unacquainted with such countries as Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia and Macedonia; thus, in each episode, Palin tours a few select Eastern European regions, where he meets and talks with indigenes, studies the buildings and the landscapes, samples the food and essentially uncovers a fascinating series of cultures long "hidden" to the west.

In episode five, "Baltic Summer," Palin journeys from Talinn, Estonia through Latvia and Lithuania and sails from Kaliningrad Russia into the waters of the Baltic Sea. Highlights include a visit to an Estonian "pyramid house," a glimpse of a long-clandestine astonomy telescope in Latvia, and an extended discussion of Estonian leech medicine. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
